APTA hosts 2022 Congressional fly-in

June 23, 2022
APTA members participated in nearly 130 meetings with Congressional offices.

American Public Transportation Association (APTA) members met with key representatives from Congress to emphasize the importance of fully funding public transportation, including public transit and passenger rail investments authorized by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The meetings came on the eve of the House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee markup of its transportation appropriations bill.

“We appreciate members of Congress and their staffs taking the time to meet with our public- and private-sector members. We are taking this time to ensure that the promise of the IIJA is realized and that public transit succeeds in our essential role in keeping our society working, and to keeping America’s social and economic recovery going through the full implementation of the IIJA,” said APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas.

As part of this day of Congressional advocacy, APTA transit agency CEOs, transit board members, and business members encouraged Congress to ensure that public transportation and passenger rail funds are available to build infrastructure of the future. APTA members met directly with several key members, including Senators Mike Braun (R-IN) and Tim Scott (R-SC), and Representatives Mike Carey (R-OH-15), Lloyd Doggett (D-TX-35), Chris Jacobs (R-NY-27), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA-2), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Donald Payne (D-NJ-10) and Eric Swalwell (D-CA-15).

"We also thank our APTA members, who have carved out time in their schedules to advocate on behalf of the forward-looking infrastructure investment of the past year that will modernize public transit systems and meet the growing mobility demands of cities and communities large and small," added Soutelas.
