For the past five holiday seasons, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Overbrook Shop Maintenance Manager Christopher Guinan and his family have delivered gently used bicycles Guinan has refurbished to local organizations that assist children in need in the SEPTA service region. This year, Guinan has completed his 500th bike. The bike will be part of a large donation the Guinans are delivering via truck to Intercultural Family Services Inc. in South Philadelphia.

Guinan, a 30-year SEPTA employee, who repairs the bikes in his own home, uses his free time and his own money to repair gently used bicycles for children across the Delaware Valley.

What started as a donation of five bikes in 2011 has grown exponentially. This year, Guinan and his family, including daughter Lauren, a clerk for SEPTA’s Regional Rail operations, will donate their 500th bicycle. The Guinans will even deliver the bikes: many of which came from SEPTA staff and members of his community. In addition to Intercultural Family Services, Inc., the Guinans have also donated bikes to Shriners Hospital for Children.

Intercultural Family Services Inc. (Intercultural) is an independent non- profit 501 (c) (3) human services agency founded in 1979, committed to serving the needs of children and families in the Greater Philadelphia area.
