Mass Transit, the only magazine exclusively dedicated to public transportation, has named the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority's (HART) Shannon Haney as one of the Mass Transit Top 40 Under 40. This is the second time a HART employee has received this prestigious recognition.

Every year, Mass Transit, honors professionals who have made significant contributions to the public transit industry. Honorees were nominated by their peers and judged on criteria that included job commitment, industry involvement and contribution along with achievement in his or her position and innovation in his or her field.

Winners will be showcased in the September/October cover feature of Mass Transit magazine and online at www.MassTransitmag.com. "I am honored that Mass Transit recognized me with this significant award," said Shannon Haney, HART ITS Coordinator. "However, I want to thank the entire HART team for all your support."

Haney is the agency's ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) Coordinator. In this role, Haney helps negotiate contracts for ITS service and support including a recent 5-year agreement with Xerox under Haney's leadership HART was able to introduce our first real-time information system, OneBusAway Tampa and now serves on the national OneBusAway Board of Directors. Since it was originally launched, the number of hits on OneBusAway Tampa has skyrocketed. HART has achieved quite an impressive 208 Million hits in a 13 month period, or 800,000 hits per weekday.

A rising star in the ITS and service development stages, Haney is responsible for more than development projects. Some of his key responsibilities include the management of the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system which is the data seen by HART dispatchers that includes vehicle location, and vehicles off route, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system which provides the ability to know where each vehicle is in real time, and the radio network. Additionally, he also oversees the Geographic Information System (GIS) which captures, stores, analyzes and manages geographical data (e.g. how many people live within 1/4th mile of a bus route), and other intelligent transportation systems for all transportation modes of HART: fixed-route bus, on-demand, paratransit and streetcar.

"I am elated that Shannon has been recognized for his hard work and contributions to HART," said Katharine Eagan, HART Chief Executive Officer. "His innovative thinking and ability to generate strong agency support is key to many projects' ultimate success. Congratulations Shannon."
