Tom Maguire, director of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) Sustainable Streets Division, will serve at interim director of transportation following action by the SFMTA Board of Directors on July 16.
Maguire will begin Aug. 14 and replace Ed Reiskin, who is leaving the agency in August following five years as SFMTA’s director of transportation. Maguire’s tenure as interim director of transportation will last until a permanent candidate is named.
Maguire joined SFMTA in 2014 after serving as assistant commissioner at the New York City Department of Transportation, where he oversaw New York’s Bus Rapid Transit, Freight Mobility, Peak Rate Parking (PARK Smart) and Alternative Fuels programs. He has also worked in the private sector at the engineering and design firm Arup. He holds a master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers.
“Tom’s broad view of the agency, breadth of experience and wise judgment were paramount in the board’s selection of Tom to serve as interim director of transportation during this critical transition,” said Board Chairman Malcolm Heinicke.
Maguire currently serves as the SFMTA’s Director of the Sustainable Streets Division. SFMTA notes that he has spearheaded the agency’s Vision Zero efforts to reengineer the city’s streets to end traffic fatalities. He oversees staff which operates, engineers, designs and plans the city’s traffic, parking, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure and provides transit security and parking enforcement.
The SFMTA Board says its intention is to move “swiftly and thoughtfully” as it works to find a permanent replacement and notes that the public is welcome to provide feedback on what they would like to see in the next director by emailing [email protected].
