Maryland Department of Transportation Continues Its Award-Winning Ways

In the past 2 ½ years since the Hogan Administration took office, the Maryland Department of Transportation and its various units have continued to win local and national acclaim for delivering outstanding initiatives while meeting the daily transportation needs of Marylanders. Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn today announced that MDOT has received 167 awards and acknowledgements since January 2015 ‑ 90 awards in the first 18 months  and 77 additional recognitions through July.

“The MDOT team continues to demonstrate its commitment to customer service,” said Secretary Rahn, who credited MDOT’s 10,206 employees for the success. “Our dedicated staff works very hard every day to provide travelers exceptional quality products and service throughout Maryland.”

The recognitions include MDOT’s multimillion-dollar transit projects, bus safety and security measures, advertising campaigns and highway construction programs statewide. The awards showcase the state’s commitment to safety, sustainability, infrastructure, customer service and economic prosperity. 

Awards were presented throughout MDOT, which is comprised of five business units and one Authority: MDOT State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA), MDOT Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA), MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA), MDOT Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA), MDOT Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA), and the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). MDOT is uniquely configured, with all its units under one umbrella, to give its leaders the ability to craft a coordinated and balanced approach to transportation. MDOT’s core mission is to be a customer-driven leader that delivers safe, sustainable, intelligent, and exceptional transportation solutions to help customers connect to life’s opportunities.

MDOT MTA

• July 2017: American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Quality of Life/Community Development Award. Medium category (projects costing between $25 million and

• June 2017: MPA’s Environmental Management System (EMS) recertified under new International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2015 standard. ISO is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies. This systematic approach includes compliance with all regulations and laws, preventing or mitigating adverse environmental impacts, protecting public health, and communicating environmental information to all interested parties, including communities.
• June 2017: Journal of Commerce recognized Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore as the fourth
  fastest-growing port in North America in 2016.
• June 2017: Inbound Logistics magazine named Port of Baltimore a “Green Partner” in recognition of its Clean Diesel program.
• May 2017: Port of Baltimore recognized for posting a record first quarter with 2,560,065 tons of general cargo, surpassing the previous record for the best January through March performance of 2,443,062 tons set last year. General cargo includes cars, containers, farm and construction machinery, forest products and breakbulk. The five percent improvement over 2016 was due primarily to cars and containers. Cars were up six percent over the first quarter of 2016.
• January 2017: Port of Baltimore public marine terminals recognized for setting records in 2016 with key targeted commodities, surpassing 10 million total tons of general cargo for the first time ever. The record was up five percent from 2015.
• January 2017: Port of Baltimore public marine terminals recognized for handling record number of containers in 2016, with 538,567 containers, up three percent from 2015’s record of 523,848.
• January 2017: Port of Baltimore public marine terminals posted record January, handling 923,030 tons of general cargo (cars, containers, farm and construction equipment, forest products, and breakbulk). Most of that tonnage was containers, which also had a record for one month, 712,386 container tons. The general cargo record was a 14 percent improvement over January 2016.
• January 2017: Port of Baltimore public marine terminals recognized for record number of forest products in 2016, with 519,744 tons of rolled paper, up 30 percent from 2015.
• January 2017: Port of Baltimore recognized for handling most cars among all U.S. ports for sixth straight year.
• January 2017: MdQI Maryland Port Administration Award under $5 Million; Dundalk Marine Terminal – Lot 304 Drainage Improvements at Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore, with WBCM of Towson, MD and Marine Technologies of Baltimore.
• December 2016: U.S. Coast Guard recognized the public marine terminals at the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore with a top rating of ‘excellent’ on a security assessment from the sixth consecutive year.
• November 2016: Journal of Commerce named Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore the most efficient port in the U.S. for the third consecutive time. The Port averaged 71 container moves per hour per berth, a rate faster than all major American ports.
• October 2016: Public Relations Society of America – Maryland Chapter Best in Maryland Award of Excellence for Advertorials (Journal of Commerce POB advertorial).
• October 2016: Public Relations Society of America – Maryland Chapter Best in Maryland Award of Excellence for Events (Maersk event).
