Once again, the Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA) will be providing free direct bus service to this year's Senior Expo on Thursday, October 20th, to ensure that local seniors can attend the annual community event. Expo organizers at High Desert Medical Group are expecting a large crowd, and AVTA’s round trip service from the Antelope Valley Senior Center to the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds has proven to be both convenient and popular.
"Each year, High Desert Medical Group does a fantastic job in putting the Expo together, bringing so many community partners together to create this experience for our local senior citizens," stated Board Chairman Marvin Crist. "This bus service allows many to attend who otherwise might not have any way to get there."
AVTA's special service will include two trips from the senior center at 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Passengers will be transported directly to the Expo, located in the H.W. Hunter Pavilion at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds. Expo attendees will have the opportunity to visit more than 100 vendor booths and take advantage of free health services, including flu shots. The AVTA bus will depart from the fairgrounds at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to return passengers to the senior center in Lancaster. The senior center is currently taking sign-ups for the bus, which is usually filled to capacity for this event.
This year’s Senior Expo theme is “The Game of Life”, with special guest speaker American TV Game Show Hall of Fame honoree Peter Marshall. Attendees will have the chance to win prizes as Marshall plays the host of "Let's Make a Deal" with the audience. Seniors are encouraged to dress in costumes, which increases their chance to be selected to participate. The highlight of the event will be the presentation of the Senior of the Year award to one of the five very deserving Antelope Valley senior citizen nominees.
“We are happy to provide this service to our Antelope Valley seniors for this exciting community event,” said AVTA Executive Director Len Engel. “The Senior Expo is a great opportunity for our senior citizens to receive vital information about health and services, and AVTA is glad to offer its support.”
AVTA offers all eligible Antelope Valley seniors a free 12-month bus pass for unrestricted use on local transit service. Seniors also qualify for AVTA’s Dial-A-Ride service, which provides curb to curb transportation throughout the Antelope Valley, and can take advantage of discounted rates on AVTA’s commuter service.
