Lane Closures Scheduled for George Washington Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, Holland Tunnel

Sept. 6, 2016
The George Washington Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and Holland Tunnel have instituted lane closures next week due to ongoing construction and repair projects.

The George Washington Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and Holland Tunnel have instituted lane closures next week due to ongoing construction and repair projects. These facilities remained open through Labor Day weekend, with all non-emergency construction work that would require lane closures on hold until Tuesday morning.

The closings, scheduled in conjunction with other regional agencies to minimize traffic impacts, are as follows:

George Washington Bridge:

  • The GWB’s lower-level eastbound lanes closed Tuesday through Thursday (Sept. 6-8) from 9 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. the following morning; and on Friday, Sept. 9 from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. the next morning. During these closures, all eastbound traffic will be limited to the bridge’s upper level. These closures are necessary to accommodate an ongoing repair and repaving project.

Bayonne Bridge:

  • The bridge remained open through Labor Day weekend, and will resumed its normal weekday and weeknight closure schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 6.  On Tuesday, Sept. 6 through Friday, Sept. 9, the bridge will close from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  On Tuesday, Sept. 6 through Thursday, Sept. 8, the bridge also will close from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.  On certain weekdays the bridge will open at 4:30 a.m. to provide an alternate route for drivers affected by 4:30-5 a.m. traffic holds on the Goethals Bridge.
  • For Staten Island residents: Overnight closures of Richmond Terrace will not take place during Labor Day weekend.  They will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 6 through Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 p.m. each night until 5 a.m.  During this time, residents will have local access to Newark Avenue and John Street. These closures are required to safely allow for overhead roadway installation.

Holland Tunnel:

  • One westbound lane in the Holland Tunnel will close during overnight hours on Tuesday night through Thursday night (Sept. 6-8) from 11:59 p.m. each night through 5:30 a.m. the following morning. These closures are necessary for repairs to the tunnel’s air supply ports.
