Complete streets enhance safety and mobility for everyone. Working closely with the community, the RTC has identified locations for complete street improvements outlined in the Complete Streets Master Plan, which was adopted unanimously by the RTC Board recently.
The plan also analyzed traffic and other safety data in order to determine what specific types of complete street improvements may be needed at certain locations. All complete streets have different elements tailored to the needs of individual neighborhoods and communities. Examples of complete street improvements include:
- New bike lanes
- Wider sidewalks
- Enhanced pedestrian crossings with flashing lights
- Transit stops with new amenities
“This plan will help guide future decisions when we’re making safety enhancements in neighborhoods. We want to thank the local jurisdictions and many residents in the Truckee Meadows who attended meetings, submitted comments and shared their ideas online,” RTC Planning Director Amy Cummings said.
Although this is the region’s first Complete Streets Master Plan, the RTC has finished complete streets projects already. These include stretches of Victorian Avenue/Nichols Boulevard, Keystone Avenue, SE McCarran Boulevard, Sutro Street, Harvard Way and West Plumb Lane. Studies following improvements have noted substantial reductions in crashes and the severity of crashes.
