The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) has joined more than 100 public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the 11th Annual Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 16.

The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) has joined more than 100 public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the 11th Annual Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 16.

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the national public transportation awareness day encourages people to “Dump the Pump” by parking their car and riding public transit instead. The tag line is: Dump the Pump.  Ride Public Transit.

CDTA is urging people to show us how they are “dumping the pump” through its social media channels for a chance to win free bus passes and other great prizes. On Thursday, June 16 the public is encouraged to send a photo and caption to the CDTA Facebook page or Tweet a photo to @CDTA with the hashtag #dumpthepump for a chance to win. Five winners will be randomly selected from all of the entries.

APTA’s most recent Transit Savings Report shows an individual in a two-person household can save, on average, nearly $9,500 a year when taking public transit instead of driving. The first National Dump the Pump Day was started in June 2005 to combat rising gas prices, rallying public transit systems across the country to participate in Dump the Pump Day.
