SEPTA gathered with local elected officials and neighborhood leaders on Monday, May 23, 2016 to break ground on the long-needed overhaul of a transit hub in West Philadelphia.
The 61st and Pine Bus Loop Improvement Project, a $1.8 million capital program initiative, will result in the full reconstruction of this key facility, with safety enhancements, added accessibility and a variety of other upgrades. The 61st and Pine Bus Loop is a terminus point for the Route 42 bus, one of SEPTA's busiest with an average daily ridership of nearly 13,000.
"This project is a great example of how SEPTA is reinvesting in our system and in the communities we serve, said SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey D. Knueppel. "SEPTA looks forward to providing our riders, employees and the community with a first-class transit hub at 61st and Pine."
The project, which is scheduled to be finished in spring 2017, will result in a number of improvements in and around the facility, such as:
- A new driveway, new curbs and a new passenger boarding platform that are accessible and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Installation of energy efficient lighting and improved security features
- Construction of an open-air passenger waiting shelter
- Installation of site amenities including trash cans, bike racks and fencing
- Landscaping of the site; new signage throughout the facility
During construction, the Route 42 will continue to serve passengers at 61st and Pine. Buses will utilize portions of 61st Street and Pine Street when necessary to accommodate the work.
The 61st and Pine Bus Loop project is part of the overall Rebuilding the SEPTA System capital improvement plan. The Authority is embarking on long-needed upgrades throughout the system thanks to Pennsylvania Act 89, which was passed in November 2013 to provide a dedicated source of funding for transportation improvements throughout the Commonwealth.
