STM Bus Garage is Certified LEED Gold

Oct. 23, 2015

Located in the borough of Saint-Laurent, the Transit Centre (CT) Stinson of the Montreal Transit Corp. received a Gold certification level of LEED-NC standard Green Building Council Canada, a first in Quebec for this type of building.

LEED, the way forward for the STM

"We chose to make this project an exemplary sustainable initiative, which paves the way for our future achievements, said Philippe Schnobb, chairman of the STM. And our experience shows that lead a project according to the principles of sustainable development is profitable! For example, the heat recovery system, acquired for $ 4.1 million, generating a recurring energy savings of about $ 925,000 annually. "

"We welcome this initiative of the STM which is fully consistent with the objectives of the city of Montreal's sustainable development. This green building demonstrates vision and commitment of our Administration in favor of responsible development for the future of the metropolis and of future generations, "added Aref Salem, head of Transport Executive Committee the city of Montreal.

Opened in 2014, the CT Stinson has several innovative green features for a transportation center:

Energetic efficiency

  • The heat recovery system effective in more than 80 percent
  • 21 Roof skylights will minimize artificial lighting
  • Internal bus traffic, minimizing the opening and closing for inputs and outputs, reducing energy loss while maximizing the efficiency of travel in addition to reducing pollution
  • 60 percent less energy consumption than other centers STM

Reduce heat islands

  • Green roof covering 8,000 m2 (ie a football field and a half); the rest of the roof is covered with reflective material
  • Site greening over 500 trees, 1,300 shrubs and plants and 22,000 m2 of turf areas

Resource Consumption

  • Devices recovery of wash water and rinse buses and rainwater to reduce by 75 percent the consumption of drinking water
  • Use of sustainable materials, including wood and steel, and regional origin, favoring the local economy but also reducing GHG emissions related to transportation of materials

Integrated mobility

  • Parking spaces for cars in car-sharing
  • Charging stations for electric cars
  • Inside storage for 70 bicycles

A unique building

An area of 38,400 square meters, the Centre provides maintenance, refueling and storage of 300 buses (200 regular and 100 articulated), in addition to host 700 employees. This is only the second STM's transportation center that houses articulated buses. The CT Stinson serves 32 bus routes.

Moreover, it is the first transportation center of the Company to be operated exclusively for internal bus traffic, minimizing vehicle movements impacts to neighbors and make operations more efficient STM in reducing travel time.

The STM has benefited from the financial support of the Ministry of Transport of Quebec to complete this major project, which was completed at a cost of $ 154.8 million.

A winning project designed by the architectural firm Lemay, the Transit Centre Stinson has already won several awards and honors, including:

  • Novae Corporate Citizenship Award - Category "Sustainable Building"
  • Great price of the Quebec consulting engineering - category "Mechanical-Electrical Building"
  • Canadian Institute of Steel Construction - categories "Green Buildings", "Industrial projects" and "Young Architects"
  • International Design Prize awards - category "Concept"
