KAT Awarded ‘Shining Star’ from Federal Transit Administration
At a May Region IV Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Conference in Atlanta, Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) received the Shining Star Award, in recognition of its innovative transit center, Knoxville Station.
The John J. Duncan Jr. Knoxville Station Transit Center opened to the public in August of 2010 and has continued to draw not only new passengers to the transit system, but also visitors interested in innovative design and architecture. The FTA award, presented by Region IV Administrator Yvette Taylor, listed the highlights of the station which targeted it for the award.
“The multi-level facility was designed to accommodate a single platform busway elevated over eleven lanes of traffic. The elevated busway includes on-street parking, wide sidewalks, and bus berths…The facility also has a green roof, a solar panel unit for research and is silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.”
City of Knoxville’s Director of Transit Dawn Distler, and KAT Chief Administrative Officer Melissa Roberson received the award for KAT.
“This was a fantastic surprise,” says Distler. “We are enormously proud of Knoxville Station, and it is great that the FTA also recognizes what a unique and creative facility we have here. We share this award with all of the design/build team that worked together to make this transit center a reality, from the architectural and engineering teams Bullock Smith & Partners and McCarty Holsaple McCarty to the city administration and public building authority who managed the design and construction.”
