STM Among Top Corporate Citizens in Canada
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) announced it ranks among the most responsible mid-size Canadian corporations, according to Corporate Knights, a magazine specializing in corporate sustainability, or clean capitalism. The STM ranks third in Canada and first in Québec in a list made public this morning. The STM also ranks first overall in the transportation industry in Canada.
To establish its "Future 40 Responsible Leaders in Canada," ranking, Corporate Knights analyzed the sustainability and socially responsible performance of 187 Canadian corporations with revenues under $2 billion (or over $2 billion but with fewer than 2000 employees) before selecting the top 40. The ranking system is based on a dozen indicators that measure efficient resource consumption, good governance and management of human resources.
According to the specialized magazine, the STM stands out particularly because of its efficient management of residual materials and of the diversity in its management team and board of directors. The STM is proactive in reporting its environmental, social and economic performance with the publication of a sustainable development report since 2008 in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative guidelines. It was this disclosure that led to including the STM in CK’s ranking.
"The STM takes pride in having its efforts to adopt more sustainable and responsible practices recognized at the national level. The company makes sustainability a key factor in its decisions and the superior results achieved in that area stem from the commitment of both employees and management," noted STM chairman Philippe Schnobb.
