The Illinois Green Business Association (IGBA) presented the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) with its Green Business Certification at the MTD Board of Trustees meeting on May 28.

MTD is the first public transit district in Illinois to complete the program, and the 39th organization to become a green certified business through the IGBA.

IGBA's green business certification process is a rigorous one during which IGBA staff and MTD worked closely together. The checklist assessment reviews more than 250 green management practices and identifies whether MTD has implemented certain practices. Practices are verified to confirm fulfilment of the requirement and, once verified, certification is awarded.

MTD's commitment to sustainability is demonstrated through its ongoing training and education of its workforce in sustainable practices. MTD's Environmental and Sustainability Management System was certified to the ISO 14001:2004 international standard in 2013. The ISO certification, receipt of the 2013 Governor's Sustainability Award, and the IGBA Green Business Certification are evidence that the program that MTD has developed is effective and beneficial to the environment. As public transportation providers and corporate citizens of the communities we serve, MTD believes that it is important to be environmentally responsible.
