ASU student and Valley Metro intern, Sam Stevenson, met recently with former Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs about her namesake internship program.

Stevenson, a native of Birmingham, England, is a recent ASU graduate with a master’s degree in engineering. The purpose of the internship is to provide an opportunity for a student of planning, engineering or a related field to receive hands-on experience in the public transportation industry.

“It was truly an honor to meet Mayor Scruggs and to be selected for the internship program in her name,” said Stevenson. “Her passion for regional transit has been crucial to the development of public transportation in the Valley, and to hear her story first-hand was fascinating.”

Valley Metro named the annual transit internship program in honor Mayor Scruggs due to her commitment to public transportation for more than 19 years. She served as Valley Metro’s longest serving Board member and Chair in 2008. She also led the way in supporting dedicated funding sources to help ensure the expansion of transit in Maricopa County.

Stevenson is gaining experiencing working alongside staff in various divisions of Valley Metro including operations, design and construction, planning, government affairs and marketing/community relations.
