Looking for a way to save money, avoid the stress of traffic congestion, and be kind to the environment? The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) encourages motorists to dump the pump on Thursday, June 20 and ride public transit.
The eighth annual “Dump the Pump” Day is sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), in partnership with the Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).
“Dump the Pump Day is a perfect opportunity for people to learn more about the variety of transit options offered by the MTA,” said MTA Administrator Robert L. Smith. “From MARC Train to Metro subway and light rail as well as local and commuter bus, we strive to make better choices available that can deliver better results for the people of Maryland.”
Affordability and accessibility make public transportation a viable option for those who wish to save money on gas. According to APTA’s most recent Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two person household can save an average of nearly $9,800 annually by downsizing to one car.
These savings are based on the cost of commuting by public transportation compared to the cost of owning and driving a vehicle.
Riding public transportation also reduces traffic congestion and significantly decreases our carbon footprint.
Started in June 2006, this national public transportation awareness day emphasizes that public transportation is a great travel option that also helps people save money.
