Alexandria Transit Company (ATC) received recognition as a 2012 recipient of the Alexandria Beautification Award.
The William B. Hurd Transit Facility, home to the DASH bus system, is a 160,000 square foot building that opened in October 2009. The facility houses Alexandria Transit Company's maintenance, operations, and administrative functions. All of DASH's 72 buses and five King Street Trolleys are also stored at the facility. The building was the first transit facility in Virginia to be constructed using the design-build method of delivery. The facility construction was designed to achieve the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating. The facility was also the first in Virginia to use Virginia Department of Transportation State Urban Funds to pay for the $35 million project.
The facility was judged on visibility from the public right of way; plant colors, textures and forms; maintenance; proportion; landscaping accepts and elements; relationship and enhancement to the neighborhood; and noticeable improvement.
ATC was honored at the Beautification Awards Ceremony held at the Nannie J. Lee Center on Monday, September 24, 2012. Vice Mayor Kerry Donley and Councilman Paul Smedberg presented the award to Paul Abramson, ATC Chairman of the Board and Sandy Modell, ATC CEO and General Manager.
