Fare hikes and service cuts are among the painful options that Washington’s Metrorail system is considering as it struggles to bridge a massive budget gap.
Ahead of a formal budget proposal in November, the beleaguered transit agency gave a presentation on Thursday outlining its estimated $275 million budget shortfall for fiscal 2018 and highlighted some of its proposals to address the resources gap.
Although severe cuts and massive fare hikes are unlikely, given that Metro board members have vowed to block such moves, the presentation underscores the agency’s financial challenges as it deals with plummeting ridership and climbing maintenance costs.
