Calgary city bus drivers are now getting a little more protection on their routes.

Every year, about 70 drivers report being assaulted — everything from being sworn at to someone dumping a drink on them to an actual physical attack.

"When we think about about a physical assault that represents about 10 incidents a year where there was contact," said Calgary Transit safety chief Brian Whitelaw.

Now nine peace officers will patrol problem routes at night.

"Certainly there are routes, let's say, that go through more industrial areas, commercial areas [or] lower-income areas that would carry clientele that may not have a fare, and thusly a dispute may begin and lead to an assault," said Rick Ratcliff with the Amalgamated Transit Union.
