ON: Residents Get to Ride the Bus for Free on Wednesday
Source Guelph Mercury (Ontario, Canada)
If you've never ridden a city bus before, Wednesday is a good day for a test drive.
The city is offering free public transit as part of Clean Air Day, a national day of action to improve air quality.
The free bus service is meant to get non-riders to consider transit as a viable alternative to get to and from work, said Michael Anders, the city's general manager of community connectivity and transit.
Guelph is also participating in the annual Commuter Challenge, a week-long competition where locals track the distance they travel to work by bus, carpool, bicycle or on foot.
"We are encouraging people to get creative with their commute this year," said Heather Mathewson, the city's Commuter Challenge co-ordinator. "Guelph Transit has bike racks on every bus, allowing commuters to bike and bus to work."
In 2010, Guelph placed third in the challenge compared to other communities same size, logging a total of 14,889 kilometres using sustainable modes of transportation.
