On July 31, while on duty, Metro Bus Operator Paul Nelson noticed a home on fire in the Heights. He jumped off of his bus, raced towards the burning home and carried an injured man to safety. Nelson suffered burns to his neck and hand in the process. He says he's not a hero; he was just helping. But to everyone at Metro, Paul Nelson is the definition of a hero.
Nelson parked his bus and asked passengers if he could see if anyone needed help. With the passengers' permission, Nelson jumped into action.
"On behalf of the entire Metro family and the city of Houston, we can't thank him enough for being quick on the draw, putting himself in danger, keeping a cool head and saving a life," said Metro Chairman, Gilbert Garcia
When asked why he ran towards danger, Nelson simply said, "Life matters."
Nelson will receive special recognition from Metro's Board of Directors at the next Board meeting Aug. 27.
