STM Introduces New Service Road for Buses and Taxis

July 17, 2015

The Montreal Transit Corp. (STM) announced on July 16, the new way of commissioning reserved the Acadie Boulevard through the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, and this from July 27. The reserved lane and the bus signal priority which will be implemented later, will benefit nearly 10,000 daily trips on both lines of the main bus or the 179 and the 180.

With a total length of 4.4 km return , the reserved lane will be in operation on weekdays.Southbound will be based between Victor-Doré and Lavigerie. In the north, it will be in office between Legendre and Leuven streets. Furthermore, the addition of bus signal priority (fires "candle") outside of peak hours is provided by the city of Montreal in a second phase in 2016. These lights allow buses to have priority at intersections where they are installed.

"With the concept that will be located on the Boulevard de l'Acadie, the reserved lane will not only improve the residents' movement of the district on their way to the subway, but also workers from the Central Market area who need access to this important employment center, "said Philippe Schnobb, chairman of the board of the STM.

"Through the implementation of preferential measures for buses on the busy boulevard bordered of both commercial and residential sectors, collective transport supply is enhanced and more fluid movements with significant savings regarding the travel time for users ", added Aref Salem, member of the Executive Committee of the City of Montreal and responsible for transport.

"This is great news for the thousands of residents of the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville using buses 179 and 180. I thank the STM also collaborating to improve transit service in our industry," said Pierre Gagnier, mayor of the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, and member of the STM Board of Directors.

Recall that the preferential measures for buses (MPB) are interventions on the road network to provide priority to public transport and to improve the efficiency and timeliness of the service. The MPB, which include dedicated lanes and priority traffic lights for buses, enable time savings of about 10 percent. To date, thus including lanes on the axis of Canada, the STM has 189.4 km of reserved lanes and 145 intersections with signal priority, for a total of just over 215.1 kilometers from preferential measures for buses (MPB). The Company aims to achieve the target of 375 km of MPB 2017.
