    RTC Project Wins National Award

    The RTC’s 4th Street/Prater Way Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project has been selected to receive a Transportation Planning Excellence Award by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). The RTC’s project is only one of eight nationally to receive the honor.

    The project, which will begin construction in 2017, will make downtown Reno, Nevada, more connected with downtown Sparks, Nevada.

    Between RTC 4th Street Station in Reno and RTC Centennial Plaza in Sparks, sidewalks will be widened and improved, to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Bike lanes, new lighting and landscaping will also be added. The project will also mean the addition of four new all electric buses to the RTC fleet to serve the route.

    The project will improve mobility for all modes of transportation and enhance safety for everyone.

    “It’s important to recognize the creative efforts of the nation’s transportation planners,” said Acting Federal Transit Administrator Therese W. McMillan. “RTC project leaders expect the BRT line will spur economic development and improve quality of life in an area where more than half of residents are low income by connecting them to jobs and educational opportunities.”

    “This project directly connects people to the region’s educational institutions and more than 7,000 jobs in the 4th Street/Prater Way corridor, plus nearly 39,000 jobs in the heart of Reno that are accessible on our existing RTC Rapid BRT line,” RTC Executive Director Lee Gibson said. “We are proud to receive this recognition and thank the community for their partnership in developing this project.”

    Among the judging criteria were: public involvement, innovation and effectiveness and potential for long term benefits. This honor follows a $16 million federal grant for the project.
