A groundbreaking ceremony for CCTA’s new Downtown Transit Center took place May 18 on St. Paul Street between Cherry Street and Pearl Street. Speakers at this event will include; The Honorable Senator Patrick Leahy, Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger as well as other federal, state and local officials.
South Burlington-based PC Construction was awarded the construction contract in March 2015. The firm will work in collaboration with the design team of Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. (VHB), who is providing engineering services, and Truex Cullins as the lead architectural design consultant. Construction is set to begin in late May or early June.
The start of construction comes after a thorough site selection process that included the endorsement of the St. Paul Street site by an eleven-member Downtown Transit Center Advisory Committee and the official site selection by the CCTA Board of Commissioners on June 19, 2012. The new Transit Center will replace the current Cherry Street terminal with a modern facility that will support growing ridership, improve overall customer experience and promote economic development.
The new facility will also offer a number of amenities such as a climate-controlled indoor waiting area, restrooms and a covered boarding platform. A new secure, on-site break room will accommodate driver needs between shifts and include a kitchen, quiet room and restrooms.
