WTS-OC Hosts Girls Engineering Day
The Orange County chapter of Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) in partnership with Anaheim Unified High School District (AUHSD) will host the first “Girls Engineering Day.” The event will provide nearly 100 young women from eight AUHSD junior high and high schools the chance to learn about careers in engineering and transportation. The event supports the WTS’s Transportation YOU program, which is designed to engage middle and high school-aged girls and inspire them to enter STEM degree programs and careers in the transportation industry.
Girls Engineering Day, set for 7:45 a.m.-1 p.m. May 16, at Dale Junior High School in Anaheim, will give participants an understanding of the broad range of careers in transportation, and will support WTS-OC’s mission to advance and advocate for women in the transportation industry.
During the event, there will be five main “stations” where participants can learn more about engineering through interactive activities focusing on: Environmental, Survey, Geotechnical, Transit/Traffic and Highway/Bridge. The lunch program will include two speakers: Amy Choi, a designer with the engineering firm Rail Pros who is a former student at Dale Junior High, and Rose Casey, Director of Highway Programs/Highway Project Delivery at Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and a seasoned transportation leader. Choi and Casey will share their insights and experiences of being successful women in the transportation field.
