After safely driving millions of miles in a Metro bus, Ronald Combs, of Fairfax, will receive the Safe Driver Award of Honor from the National Safety Council. He is also retiring from Metro after 32 years, while holding its highest internal safety record.
All Award of Honor winners must have met the criteria of not having a preventable incident within the past 15 years or the last 250,000 miles of driving. Combs was inducted into the National Safety Council’s “Two Million Mile Club” in 2012 for driving two million miles each without an accident.
During National Safety Month in June, two Metro bus operators received awards from the National Safety Council. One of the award-winners was the first woman at Metro to receive this national honor. In the last 40 years, about 60 Metro bus operators have earned the achievement of being inducted into the “Two Million Mile Club.”
In May, Metro was recognized as the first mid-size transit system to receive top honors for both safety and security from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), an organization representing the transit industry.
