With gas prices near $4 a gallon, the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County is inviting you to Dump the Pump. As part of this national movement, people may ride RTC transit services for free on June 19. In addition to riding transit, people may participate simply by choosing to walk, bike or carpool.
This is the ninth year for Dump the Pump, which is sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association. Last year, 33,256 people rode on RTC transit services on Dump the Pump day – a record day for ridership in 2013. The Washoe County Health District is partnering with RTC for the event because the district believes in promoting clean air and a healthy lifestyle.
“It improves air quality by reducing car emissions and traffic congestion, and helps to incorporate physical activity into the day. Participating in Dump the Pump is a perfect opportunity to test out using active transportation for those that have not yet tried it,” Health Officer Kevin Dick said.
People who choose to Dump the Pump, and record their trips will receive small prizes. Participants recording their trips
will also be eligible for drawings for larger prizes.
Bus riders who record their green trips are eligible to win a Toshiba Excite 7c-8GB tablet. Walkers recording trips have the chance to win a Fitbit One activity tracker. Bikers recording their green trips could win two Mini Monkey Lights. Those recording their carpool could win a JBL Flip Portable Stereo Speaker.
