New NJ Transit commuter buses have started rolling off the assembly line again, sparing workers in Canada and North Dakota from layoffs that were announced in September.

Officials at Motor Coach Industries announced that the potential layoffs won't be necessary after NJ Transit officials told them to resume production of 1,219 "cruiser" buses. Work on the buses had been halted as part of Gov. Chris Christie's suspension of $3.5 billion in nonessential construction projects in July.

Bus production resumed on Oct. 24 after Christie signed a bill raising the state gas tax by 23 cents per gallon and providing funds for transportation projects and purchases.
