The Santa Maria City Council approved a transit plan Tuesday that increased bus fares, and changed evening and holiday public transportation schedules.
The state of California requires the city’s public transit agency -- Santa Maria Area Transit (SMAT) -- compile a Short Range Transportation Plan to evaluate the operations and finances of the transportation service.
The evaluation concluded that because of the rising cost of running a transportation system, the city should raise its fares and make edits to its holiday and evening schedules.
