A new bus transit hub has been opened by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) and Clayton County at the Clayton County Justice Center in Jonesboro.

The opening was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community paint day.

Phase one of transit improvements at the Clayton County Justice Center include moving bus stop operations from Post Way to within the center’s northwest parking lot. The new transit hub will serve four bus routes with 800 daily riders. It features enhanced bus stops and shelters, park and ride spaces, and improved walkways and crosswalks.

MARTA and Clayton County leadership were joined by around 100 people to cut the ribbon on the new transit hub and kick off the painting event.

MARTA’s public art program, Artbound, engaged local muralist George F. Baker III to design artwork that was translated into stencils the community used to paint temporary concrete barriers between the buses and bus shelters.

Phase two of the transit improvements at the Clayton County Justice Center will be completed in the next two years and include a Breeze machine and digital signage showing bus arrival times.

The Clayton County Transit Center is part of a larger commitment to improving transit and transit amenities in Clayton County. MARTA has installed 19 new bus shelters and upgraded 17 bus stops this year, with a goal of improving 150 bus stops over a five-year period. Long-term projects include building a multipurpose Operations and Maintenance Facility in the county and establishing bus rapid transit that would encompass portions of two of the authority’s busiest bus routes, 196 and 191.
