Alameda-Contra Cost Transit District (AC Transit) is starting construction of the bus rapid transit (BRT) Fruitvale Station this August.
The station on International Boulevard at 34th Avenue will feature new lighting, furniture, landscaping and original artwork celebrating the neighborhood’s unique character. Work on the station will take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be completed by late October. Some weekend and nighttime work may also occur.
In order to build the Fruitvale Station as fast as possible, 33rd and 34th Avenues will be temporarily closed from approximately mid-September through October. In addition, some parking spaces will be temporarily removed between Fruitvale Avenue and 35th Avenue.
The new parking lot built by AC Transit on 35th Avenue east of International Boulevard, which includes 21 parking stalls, will continue to provide parking options for those visiting Fruitvale. To further support local businesses, AC Transit will establish several loading zones so businesses can continue to receive deliveries.
After the BRT’s Fruitvale stations are built, International Boulevard will be repaved, new traffic lanes and high-visibility crosswalks will be installed, and new lighting and traffic signals will be energized, helping to make travel safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. In addition, more than 60 trees will be planted between Fruitvale and 42nd Avenues, further beautifying the community.
BRT will operate primarily in a transit-only bus lane, with center-median and curbside stations that mirror the advantages of train service. BRT’s innovative design will deliver faster, more reliable bus service, arriving every 7 minutes during peak times. When it launches in December 2019, BRT will bring riders into the heart of Fruitvale to work, shop and play, while connecting residents to nearby schools, services and businesses.
