For all that Indianapolis has going for it — the city is on the short list for Amazon's next headquarters, the airport keepsgettingnamedbest in North America, the technology sector is booming, the restaurant scene is maturing and tourism keeps reaching new heights — there is one topic that makes urbanists here feel resigned to mediocrity.
Transit.
Indianapolis' inadequate bus system and lack of rail options stand out to anyone who's used the comprehensive public transportation options in cities such as New York, Chicago or San Francisco. Now that Amazon is hunting for a new home — with transit cited among its top criteria — Indianapolis' offerings look especially meager compared to other cities on the company's list.
