Keeping Up with the Times

Sept. 11, 2014

Quick Response (QR) codes have started to pop up in a variety of places, TV ads, newspaper or magazines, billboards and even on bus placards and now in the pages of “Mass Transit” magazine.

If you’re not familiar with them, they’re the square barcodes with the black pattern on a white background that you’ll see on this page and elsewhere in our magazine.

Unlike standard barcodes, QR codes can store more data, including URL links, geo-coordinates, videos, coupons or text. These codes can be scanned with a smartphone to link people to additional information.

If you have a smartphone and it didn’t come with a QR scanner already installed, you can find a variety of QR scanner apps online for free.

Instead of listing a long URL you have to type in to your computer to access information, we can include a QR code and you can easily scan it to get directly to the information.

Technology keeps changing at lightning speed and we do our best to keep up and utilize what’s available to provide you with the most information possible.

Also, a reminder that the nominations are still open for this year’s Top 40 Under 40, which will again be announced in our September/October issue. It’s easy to nominate yourself or a colleague by providing a brief description or bullet points on things such as achievements in his or her position; industry involvement and contributions; or innovations in his or her position.

The industry faces a severe shortage of skilled and seasoned employees as thousands of workers from the baby-boom generation approach retirement over the next five to 10 years.

With an employee shortage being a major concern for many of our readers, we’re glad we can highlight the new generation in transit and share their accomplishments and what it is they enjoy about their role in the industry.

Nominations close May 27, so scan the QR code or visit http://top40-2011.questionpro.com to submit your nomination today!
