The project is expected to be completed significantly under budget due to a revised schedule and an accelerated monthly delivery rate of the new rail cars.
The agency commemorated its fifth anniversary with festivities and free bus fares for the day.
The 1,000-mile testing process is required to ensure all safety and quality standards are met to ensure the trains can safely operate on Caltrain’s tracks when electrified service launches in fall 2024.
The Trainset and Related Services contract will be funded in part by the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program grant the authority received in December 2023.
To support the reopening, the CTA outlined several interim safety enhancements on the Yellow Line, including reduced speeds, track cleaning, enhanced operations communications and supervised operations.
Upgrades will replace the current train control system in the subway and extend the modern system to street-level SFMTA operation for faster, more reliable service.
The new service will be introduced as a train-to-train transfer at the Metrorail Transfer Station in Hialeah, Fla., where a shuttle train will spur out of the South Florida Rail Corridor into the Florida East Coast Railway for a direct service to MiamiCentral and back.
The project has also been approved for entry into the Engineering phase of project development under the FTA’s CIG program and represents a commitment from FTA to cover 50 percent of the anticipated total cost of the project.
