GRTC pilots new on-demand service

Dec. 20, 2021
The service is to help serve riders who are impacted by the agency’s temporary halt in operations overnight on some routes due to labor shortages.

GRTC will launch a new pilot on-demand service for riders impacted by planned temporary service changes that will go into effect on Dec. 20.

Labor shortages have forced GRTC to temporarily halt service on certain routes between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. However, the agency recognizes this can affect customers who travel during these times and has launched a pilot service to transport customers between bus stops.

The pilot service is available Monday through Friday between 5 a.m.-6 a.m. and 11 p.m.-2 a.m., excluding holidays. Customers can request a ride from GRTC bus stop to bus stop, either from the Uber app or by calling 804-358-4782, once per day.

“We are excited to pilot this new on-demand service to ensure no rider is disadvantaged by GRTC’s temporary service adjustments on some routes. Although the bus schedule impacts are modest, we know most riders are commuting to or from work and rely on us to be there on time. This pilot not only preserves service for these late night and early morning commuters, it will also yield data to study in the GRTC service area for demand of an on-demand mobility service,” said GRTC CEO Julie Timm.
