STM begins renovation work at Saint Michel Métro station

The project, which will take place during the next two years, is part of the STM’s ongoing commitment to modernize its networks and ensure the safety of its infrastructure.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has begun renovation work at Saint Michel Métro station. The project is part of STM’s ongoing commitment to modernize its networks and ensure the safety of its infrastructure. 

The renovations will take place during the of the next two years and they will only affect one entrance building at a time, thereby keeping the station open and limiting the impact on customers. As a result, the station will always remain accessible. 

About the work 

The work includes: 

  • Demolition and reconstruction of the concrete slab for the entrance building 
  • Demolition and reconstruction of the concrete slab for the secondary entrance building 
  • Demolition and reconstruction of staircases 
  • Load-bearing and protective structures for escalators 
  • Resurfacing of the exterior slab 
  • Refurbishment of mechanical rooms 
  • Concrete repair work in the natural ventilation shaft 

About Saint-Michel station 

Saint-Michel station was inaugurated on June 11, 1986, and welcomed its first passengers five days later. In 2023, the station served more than 4 million passengers, making it the 19th busiest station in the network.  

About the network upgrades 

The STM is investing C$21.1 billion (US$15.6 billion) during the next decade to modernize its bus and Métro networks. By 2030, 93 percent of the agency’s infrastructure will be more than 40 years into its life.  

With the investments, STM plans to be able to increase its capacity, improve Métro accessibility, optimize the use of existing assets and boost the appeal of mass transit without having to build new facilities.
