UC Davis students design Soltrans bus stop landscape

July 29, 2022
The project is set to be completed in summer of 2022 and includes a bus stop with shelter, two garden benches and native plants.

Soltrans will work with two University of California, Davis students to assist in completing the last two projects from the Vallejo Community Based Transportation Plan (CBTP).

Along with numerous enhancements to several bus stops throughout Vallejo, two stops were identified to receive complete makeovers: Alameda and Ohio and Gary Circle and Magazine.

The students will work together to design the landscaping element of the first stop at Gary Circle and Magazine. The stop is located in South Vallejo and is located on a small island.

Ashley Gear is a junior at UC Davis majoring in Landscape Architecture. She wants to create special outdoor spaces that will impact the hearts and minds of those who visit. Within landscape architecture, her interests include landscape restoration, ecology and horticulture.

“I am super excited to be a part of this project and I look forward to working with the Vallejo community. I hope you all enjoy our bus stop,” Gear said.

Katie Wong is a third-year Landscape Architecture major at UC Davis. She chose this career path because I have always been interested in plants and designing spaces. Her goals are to revegetate the land and create spaces where people can appreciate being outdoors.

“One of my favorite parts of designing is when I am able to bring smiles and comfort to the community with my design. I am very excited about this opportunity and I can’t wait to see what the final product will look like,” Wong said.

The staff has already started demolition of the area by clearing trees and installing a concrete pad. The project is set to be completed in summer of 2022 and includes a bus stop with shelter, two garden benches and the rest of the area will be filled with native, drought-resistant and pollinator landscape.
