The 2017 Digital Signage Expo saw the introduction of new signage technology from LG, the company introduced thinner signage displays for both indoor and outdoor use.

At Digital Signage Expo (DSE) 2017 LG Electronics USA Business Solutions unveiled the new razor-thin, lightweight LG OLED “Wallpaper” commercial display and new flexible, customizable open-frame LG OLED displays.

“We’re introducing some products that are made to add to the digital signage market,” said Gary Wicka, LG’s director of marketing.

Wicka explained that the name “Wallpaper” comes from how thin the displays are. When viewing the screens from the side they are less than an inch wide.

The OLED Wallpaper signage screens are designed for indoor use and can be customized to display any sort of signage. The screens can also be viewed from any angle. That makes the OLED displays beneficial for agencies work to incorporate more signage within both routes as well as shelters and stations.

“We’ve have had interest, and in many different flavors,” Wicka said. Internationally the OLED displays have been implemented in transit terminals and station, the interest has begun branching over to the United States.

Advantages of OLED display screens;

  • Onlookers have the best viewing angle from any side
  • With the advanced pixel technology the screens display “perfect black”
  • There is an infinite contrast ratio
  • The thin design of the display itself

The proprietary LG OLED technology has created a new high-end category of displays that delivers a picture with perfect blacks and incredible color, even from wide viewing angles, which isn’t seen when LCD/LED displays are used. Thanks to OLED technology’s unique ability to turn each pixel on or completely off, LG OLED displays render perfect blacks, creating an infinite contrast ratio.

The new technology of the OLED was designed to take the signage technology to the next step.

“We take existing technology and create new personal experiences that you didn’t have before,” said Wicka. “This can be used in a variety of different formats.”

As the screens can be programed to display a wide variety of signage, agencies can also utilize multiple displays in one indoor stand. The LG OLED Wallpaper can be utilized in many different facets. It can also be installed into a standing kiosk or frame, which is best used in the transportation industry.

“It’s razor thin… you can put it back-to-back and into a panel of glass.”

Outdoor displays

LG has also enhanced its outdoor displays that are designed to make it easy on the end user. When it comes to LG’s recent outdoor products, the displays are all filter free. The 55XE3C has the ability to provide vivid images even in the event that they are in direct sunlight.

Like the OLED screens, the 55XE3C can be viewed from a wide angle. A common concern with outdoor signage is ensuring that the sign can remain readable in different conditions. The 55XE3C is equipped with smart brightness control. The auto-brightness sensor works alongside of a preset time to adjust and save power whenever possible.

The displays are also designed to handle harsh environments. Including temperatures and water.

“These are all driven by our IPS technology,” said Wicka. “With IPS technology you don’t lose any quality in the display.”
