TAPTCO recreates its Operator Development Course

The newly recreated safety training is designed to adhere to updated federal requirements while educating drivers about unsafe behaviors.

The Transit & Paratransit Company (TAPTCO) has completely recreated and expanded its Operator Development Course (ODC).

Eight years ago, TAPTCO created a Transit Bus Operator Development Training Course containing 28 video programs on DVDs, three posters and guides to help deliver the training as designed.

“Everything can become outdated and everything can be improved,” said TAPTCO President Jeff Cassell. “We are increasing the content of the new course from 28 programs to 33 and making it compliant with all the new operational FTA requirements. This is not an update, but a complete recreation involving new improved scripts, new filming and new actors. The programs in the new course are delivered from nine groups that make them easier to understand by the trainee.”

The programs in the new course are focused on the desired outcomes from the training. This means that the training educates and persuades operators to avoid all unsafe behaviors.

The new requirements for transit systems to create and follow a Public Transit Agency Safety Plan (PTASP) include detailed requirements for following a Safety Management System. These desired behaviors overlap with the actions to implement a safety culture. As such, this new course has been designed to help agencies comply with the new regulations and implement a safety culture.

The new course is available on DVD, Thumb Drive or via the web on a Learning Management System.
