On June 14, 32 Durham Regional Transit Operators were honored for their contributions to helping ensure that Durham Region is a safe place for residents and visitors alike. The Safe Driver Awards and General Manager’s Commendation for Community Safety were celebrated at a meeting of Regional Council.

The Safe Driver Awards saw 28 DRT Operators recognized for their safe driving milestones of 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 years without a single preventable collision. Each year, DRT Operators help over 10 million passengers safely get where they need to go, traveling more than 13 million kilometers in the process. For perspective, that’s the equivalent of driving the distance between Halifax and Vancouver seven times, every day of the year. These remarkable achievements are a testament to the dedication of the men and women honored, who serve their community with a safety-first mentality.

An additional four Operators were presented with the first ever General Manager’s Commendation for Community Safety. The commendations recognize Operators who go above and beyond during their regular duties by thinking fast and acting selflessly, often demonstrating outstanding feats of heroism.
