Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation’s (HART) Train 2 has arrived at Honolulu Harbor. The four-car train will be transported in three shipments to the Rail Operations Center (ROC), with the last shipment arriving May 11.
“Train 2 is the next to the last train to arrive in Hawaii, which means the vehicle portion of the rail system is nearly complete, with the final train expected to arrive within the next year,” said HART Executive Director and CEO Lori Kahikina, P.E. “After the initial opening of the rail system on June 30, there will be five trains operating during normal service, with additional trains being available as spares or for special needs. When the next segment of the rail system opens to the public in about two years, more trains will be used in daily operations.”
Train 2 is the 19th train to arrive on Oahu, out of a total of 20 four-car trains that will be needed when the service opens to the downtown area. Of the 18 trains that are already on the island, 12 are fully commissioned and are ready to be handed over to the Honolulu Department of Transportation Services in June.
After the delivery of the cars to the ROC, the four-car automated, driverless train will be assembled and will undergo rigorous safety testing and certification. Each four-car train is air conditioned and can accommodate 800 passengers, the equivalent of 10 city buses. Open gangways allow for ease of travel between cars. The trains are ADA compliant with priority areas for wheelchairs. Surfboard, bike and luggage storage areas are located within each car, and there are also areas available for strollers.
