The District Department of Transportation has announced that the DC Streetcar has served 3 million passengers since opening on February 27, 2016. As DC Streetcar nears the third anniversary of passenger service along the H/Benning corridor, plans to expand the 2.4 mile system continue to move forward.
"Mayor Bowser's top priority when we launched DC Streetcar was to deliver a system that was safe and would create new transit options for residents and visitors of our ever growing city," said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. "The ridership numbers and tremendous economic development we've seen along the H-Street corridor support the decision to move forward with the project."
DC Streetcar National Recognition
DC Streetcar’s Car Barn Training Center (CBTC) at 2550 Benning Road NE has also been lauded this year, winning two architectural awards: an Engineering News-Record (ENR) Award of Merit and Urban Land Institute (ULI) Washington’s Excellence in Institutional Development Award.
From the CBTC at Oklahoma Avenue NE on one end to Union Station at the other, the H/Benning corridor continues to grow and thrive. “DC Streetcar has driven the change and tremendous development of this corridor over the years,” said Anwar Saleem, the president of H Street Main Street. “Our shops and restaurants continue to appreciate the business that the streetcar brings them, and residents are choosing to live here for our community’s vibrant, car-free culture.”
Expansion of the DC Streetcar system is currently in the planning and design stages.
