The Monorail and Maglev World Mourns the Passing of a Monorailist

Jan. 27, 2017
The following is a statement from the International Monorail Association on the passing of Kim A. Pedersen.

It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of a monorail legend, Kim A. Pedersen, in Fremont, California. In the wake of this devastating news, transportation industry professionals are reminiscing about how his passion fueled a generation of innovators.

Inspired by another great monorail futurist, Walt Disney, Kim spent a year in the late 1980's traveling the globe to study the transportation mode of the future. He wondered why monorails were achieving success in Europe and the Orient, but only being utilized as entertainment attractions in North America.

To promote monorail development and education, Kim started The Monorail Society in 1989, which has grown to over seven thousand members from every corner of the world. The website of his organization has become a go-to source for industry news and information. In 2015, he published a book, Monorails:Trains of the Future-Now Arriving, which is regularly referenced by monorail designers and enthusiasts.

Carol Pedersen continues to support her husband's legacy by distributing his book through The Monorail Society.

We keep the Pedersen family in our thoughts and our hearts, and we continue to be grateful for their many efforts on behalf of our common interest.

In Kim's honor, please make a donation to your local Cancer Society.

"Onwards & Upwards!" - Kim A. Pedersen.
