Burns has teamed with Ansaldo STS to furnish a complete Positive Train Control (PTC) system on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Commuter Rail network.

Burns has teamed with Ansaldo STS to furnish a complete Positive Train Control (PTC) system on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Commuter Rail network. The MBTA’s service area includes 175 communities, with service stretching to 133 stations across 664 miles of track. MBTA commuter rail trains operate over a network of fourteen lines from two main terminals in downtown Boston.

Burns is leading the wayside design, survey data management, wayside transponder design and programming, and technical support and documentation for the $451 million PTC system. The system will provide integrated ACSES II and I-ETMS-based PTC systems on all MBTA commuter rail lines, enabling the Authority to meet Federal Railroad Administration safety requirements.

This project represents an additional stepping stone for Burns in becoming a recognized leader in Positive Train Control technology in North America. Burns has completed successful PTC projects for transit authorities in cities across the US, including Philadelphia, St. Louis and Anchorage.
