Regional Connector Constructors work crews under contract to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will begin a series of full weekend closures along portions of Flower Street in downtown Los Angeles between 5th Street and Wilshire Boulevard to perform decking installation activities for the Regional Connector Transit Project.
The first weekend closures will begin on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 4 a.m. to Monday, July 9 at 5 a.m. Subsequent weekend closures will start at 8 p.m. Fridays through 5 a.m. Mondays. The weekend closure of a portion of Flower Street between 5th Street and Wilshire Boulevard will occur every weekend through October 21, 2018.
The work to be done will include the removal of the roadway, installation of steel beams and a temporary installation of deck panels. The deck panels will serve as a temporary roadway to facilitate further excavation and construction of the project’s underground tunnel box for the light rail project while maintaining access to traffic using Flower Street. Local business and pedestrian access will be maintained.
Closures/Detours
The following closures and detours will be required for this decking work:
- Flower Street will be closed between 5th Street and 6th Street. I-110 off-ramps at 6th Street will be closed. Detour: Grand Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. Right turn maintained from 6th Street to Flower Street only. Northbound I-110 detour to upper 4th Street, southbound detoured to 9th Street.
- Flower Street between 6th Street and Wilshire Boulevard, I-110 off-ramps at 6th Street closed. Detour: Hope Street to Wilshire Boulevard with one 6th Street through lane maintained. Northbound I-110 detoured to upper 4th Street, southbound detoured to 9th Street.
- In late September/October, Flower Street will be closed between 6th Street and Wilshire Boulevard. Detour: Hope Street to Wilshire Boulevard. All 6th Street through traffic will be maintained. The I-110 freeway 6th Street off-ramps will be open.
The $1.75 billion Regional Connector Transit Project is a 1.9-mile underground light-rail extension that will connect the Metro Blue, Expo and Gold Lines in downtown Los Angeles and will include three new stations at 1st Street/Central Avenue, 2nd Street/Broadway and 2nd Place/Hope Street. The rail line is expected to serve 88,000 riders daily, including 17,000 new riders. It will save commuters up to 20 minutes by reducing the need to transfer. The line will provide a one-seat, one fare ride for commuters from Azusa to Long Beach and from East Los Angeles to Santa Monica. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2021.
