HDR transportation-engineering expert and co-leader of the firm’s Complete Streets program Rick Plenge will present “Shifting the Transportation Paradigm” on May 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the American College of the Building Arts in Charleston, South Carolina. His presentation will focus on the reimagining of city streets to safely and efficiently accommodate all roadway users in an equitable and sustainable way.

Plenge will take the stage amid the annual Awakening: MOTION series of community engagement events and public art installations, hosted by local groups Enough Pie and Charleston Moves. This year’s theme invites conversations about protected and connected mobility.

Plenge will discuss how a more balanced approach to the planning and design of our roadways can positively impact society on a variety of levels. For example, creating safe and viable alternatives to driving can extend access to jobs, education and healthcare for all households. He will showcase built examples from around the country where this balanced and sustainable approach has led to improved safety, mobility, physical health, environments and economies.
