Wendi Johnson, PE, CPM, received the WTS North Carolina Triangle Chapter’s Innovative Transportation Award in recognition of her abilities to lead innovative transportation projects. Johnson received the award at the GO Gala, a WTS North Carolina Triangle Chapter annual scholarship and awards event on May 3.

The specific transportation project Johnson led and WTS recognized her for is the $6 million North Carolina Department of Transportation Novo Nordisk Access Road project. As project manager she ensured project completion ahead of schedule and substantially under the original budget. The new access road supports the $1.8 billion Novo Nordisk Pharmaceutical Plant in Clayton, North Carolina. When it opens, that plant will boost the local economy by bringing approximately 700 high-paying jobs to the area.

Johnson, a senior project manager in Gannett Fleming’s Raleigh office, is responsible for providing leadership in construction-phase services for a wide variety of projects, including bridges and highways, intelligent transportation systems, wetland mitigation, and stream restoration. Additionally, she leads pre-construction activities including traffic management, construction sequencing, and constructability reviews.

Johnson earned her Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from North Carolina State University. She is also a professional engineer in North Carolina and a certified public manager. She has more than 30 years of civil engineering experience, including positions with NCDOT as a division construction engineer, state signing engineer, congestion management engineer, and traffic control project engineer.
