Phoenix Valley Metro Rail has tapped Siemens to build 11 new S70 light rail vehicles to help meet growing ridership needs and the next expansion of the 26-mile rail line. The $57.9 million contract also includes an option to purchase up to 67 additional vehicles. The new vehicles will improve the riding experience with a larger interior, energy-efficient LED lighting, and advanced cooling systems.

“Investment in transit is a major contributor to powering this nation’s ongoing economic growth, both locally and across the country,” said Valley Metro Rail Chair and Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell. “We look forward to successful collaboration and partnership with Siemens who plays a critical role in the expansion of our Valley’s light rail system.”

The light rail vehicles will be built at Siemens rail manufacturing hub in Sacramento, California, a solar-powered plant that has been in operation for more than 30 years and employs nearly 1,000 people.

“We’re proud to be chosen as a technology partner for the City of Phoenix, Valley Metro Rail and the growing number of light rail riders across the region,” said Michael Cahill, president of Siemens Rolling Stock. “These light rail vehicles, built out of our manufacturing hub in California, are the industry’s most advanced and will not only help Valley Metro Rail continue to expand their system, but will also give passengers a more comfortable, safe and enjoyable experience.”

The first light rail vehicle is expected to arrive in 2020.
