The San Francisco chapter of Women’s Transportation Seminar honored Darlene Gee, PE, HNTB Northern California district leader, as “Woman of the Year.” The award was presented to Gee for her exemplary leadership and contributions to the transportation industry during the group’s annual event in Oakland.
Over the course of more than 35 years, Gee’s career has included many high-profile transportation projects and leadership positions. She has served as principal and project manager for many clients, including Bay Area Rapid Transit, Caltrans, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, and the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. She has led large teams on complex projects that make up much of the Bay Area’s transportation backbone, and is currently working on the game-changing California High Speed Rail project.
A former president of WTS San Francisco, Gee has long been devoted to helping transform the transportation industry through the advancement of women. Beyond encouraging young women to earn degrees in the field, she has done much to mentor female transportation professionals, helping prepare them for promotion to higher-profile responsibilities. Most recently, she served as a mentor at the San Francisco Business Times’ annual Bizwomen Mentoring Monday event.
“Darlene is being recognized for her exemplary work as an outstanding female role model in transportation,” said Amy Saeyang, WTS San Francisco chapter awards chair. “She has directly contributed to the advancement of women and minorities through programs and opportunities in the transportation field and has, through her own career achievements and support of women in the industry, strengthened the reputation and credibility of women in transportation.”
Gee manages over 100 employees and oversees the operations of HNTB’s San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and Walnut Creek offices. Collectively, Gee has successfully managed the delivery of more than $6 billion in Bay Area transportation infrastructure projects.
