Auckland’s newest transport center at Ōtāhuhu Station will open on October 29, 2016 and will herald the roll out of a simpler public transport network for South Auckland.
A free community celebration will be held at the new bus station this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for members of the public to meet Auckland Transport staff and learn more about the new bus network starting the next day on Sunday, October 30.
Completing the construction of the new bus station is a major milestone for Auckland Transport, with the $28-million project being funded by Auckland Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency.
The station is at the heart of the Southern New Network, says Auckland Transport’s Chief AT Metro Officer, Mark Lambert. “Auckland is moving towards a more connected network of local feeder services connecting with frequent bus and train services. Bus and train transport hubs like Ōtāhuhu are at the heart of this transformation.
“South Aucklanders can look forward to seeing more buses on the road and at better frequencies than before. The first bus to arrive at this station is the frequent Great South Road bus from Papakura at 6.38 a.m. It is one of three bus routes that will operate at least every 15 minutes, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., seven days a week.”
Improved bus frequencies, more direct routes, Simpler Fares, and new bus stations like Ōtāhuhu will make it easier for people to connect.
Public transport patronage at Ōtāhuhu Station has increased by 9% in the past 12 months with a total of 117,000 passengers using the station to board trains in the year to August.
The old Ōtāhuhu train station was hidden behind a shipping container yard with poor access. Mr Lambert says the new station delivers a high-quality, attractive building for customers. “This is a station which is attractive and safe for people to use. Buses will also run between the station and the town center linking local businesses and residents,” says Mr Lambert.
The design of the new station reflects the history of the area and the site’s importance to local mana whenua as a historic portage for waka. Māori art and design is displayed throughout the station site with three key artworks integrated within the building.
